The Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial located at the corner of 2nd Avenue East and 1st Street was dedicated on October 13, 2003 in memory and in honor of Elias Clayton, Elmer Jackson and Isaac McGhie - three innocent African American youths murdered in our community on June 15, 1920. Over 4,000 individuals took part in the day long memorial events in downtown Duluth. The Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial is a symbol of hope and understanding in our community. As quoted in the memorial walkway - "Atonement, Compassion and Respect" are small steps toward a greater good in our community and our world.

The William A. Irvin was the proud flagship of the U.S. Steel's Great lakes Fleet. She provided elegance and comfort to the dignitaries and guests she carried. From the millions of tons of iron ore she carried, to her magnificently appointed wood-paneled staterooms and fine dining, she was the pride of the fleet. U.S. Coast Guard Vessel Sundew was launched in 1944. The Sundew tended buoys and served as an icebreaker at several ports on Lake Michigan and Lake Superior as well as the port of Duluth. The Sundew also conducted countless search and rescue missions on the often-treacherous Great Lakes. When you buy a ticket to the Great Lakes Floating Maritime Museum you will be able to tour both of these great Historic Vessels. Open daily May-October, guided tours only. Enjoy a historic 90-minute journey along the scenic St. Louis River. Here is a chance to view wildlife in its natural environment while enjoying the majestic beauty of the river and surrounding area. Using vintage equipment as well as an open "Safari Car" on its excursions, the LS&M traces its roots back to 1863 and was the first railroad linking Duluth with the Twin Cities. The LS&M is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization dedicated to the preservation of railroad history and the restoration of railroad artifacts. The train departs from the LS&M station at Grand Avenue and Fremont Street, across from the Lake Superior Zoo. ALL WEEKENDS starting Saturday, June 10th and ending Sunday, October 8th. Canal Park's Marine Museum, drawing more visitors than any other museum on Lake Superior. Film shows, model ships and exhibits featuring the commercial shipping of Lake Superior and the Duluth-Superior Harbor. At Canal Park you are within yards of giant lake carriers and foreign ships as they pass under the world-famous Aerial Lift Bridge. While you are there, sit back and enjoy the beautiful gulls, and walk along the canal's piers to its lighthouses. Known locally as the "Depot", this historic building was constructed in 1892 and for years served as Duluth's busiest railroad station and "Port of entry". The "Ellis Island" of Northeastern Minnesota, the Chateauesque-style Union Depot in downtown Duluth served as a gateway to the New World for thousands of immigrants arriving by train at the turn of the century. Today vintage steam locomotives and their antique, wooden coaches still wait silently for passengers trackside in the Lake Superior Railroad Museum, home of the Midwest's largest, indoor train collection. (See Lake Superior Railroad Museum.) Also trackside is "Depot Square" a realistic, life-size depiciton of Downtown Duluth as it looked in 1910. One low priced admission ticket covers the railroad museum, the Saint Louis County Historical Society's regional exhibits, exhibits by regional artists in the galleries of the Duluth Art Institute and the fun of learning in the Duluth Children's Museum. The Depot is also home to productions of the Duluth Playhouse. The Depot is also home to other performing arts organizations. A Great Family Adventure! Here's your chance to explore the wet, wild and wonderful world of whitewater rafting! Superior Whitewater Rafting is lcated on the St. Louis River in Carlton, just 15 miles south of Duluth. On-water trip time is two to three hours. Everything is supplied - equipment, shuttle service and the friendliest, most experienced guides you'll find on any river trip, Cost is only $36 per person. Trips run daily, May through September. Four to six persons share a raft (you'll be paired up with others to fill a raft if necessary). No experience required. Trips are ideal for both beginners and seasoned paddlers. Go early in the season for high-water adventures or late in the season for still exciting, but less challenging, flows.
